This is an old photo from UCLA fraternity Sigma Chi, which is just up the street from where a UCLA fraternity member attempted to rape a woman at a party on Friday, March 9th (International Women’s Day, no less). Though the fraternities will insist that this as an unfortunate one-time occurrence, and the university will reiterate its principles of community and commitment to safety until it is blue and gold in the face, the reality is that the fraternity system is a factory of misogyny, which will continue to devalue and commit violence against women until it is made to stop. Of course, misogyny is not restricted to the fraternity system, but it must be pointed out that the ideas championed in this photo serve as the pretext for the violence that occurred Friday night.

UCLA student arrested on suspicion of assault with intent to commit rape at Theta Chi fraternity house

A UCLA student will face charges of assault with intent to commit rape and false imprisonment, after he allegedly tried to choke another student during a party at the Theta Chi fraternity house early Friday morning. He is being held at the Inmate Reception Center in downtown Los Angeles on $200,000 bail, according to university police.

Paul Meyer, a 20-year old student who lives in the Theta Chi fraternity house at 663 Gayley Ave., is scheduled to appear in court for a formal reading of his charges on Tuesday, according to Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department records. He can plead guilty, not guilty or no contest to the charges during the arraignment.

About 2:30 a.m. Friday, Meyer allegedly attempted to choke a female UCLA student who was also attending the party, said Nancy Greenstein, a UCPD spokeswoman. She added that alcohol was available at the party, but police are still investigating whether Meyer or the victim were drinking.

Meyer and the woman knew each other before the incident took place, Greenstein said.

The female student was taken to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and has since been released, Greenstein said.

Immediately following the incident, Meyer was arrested without a struggle at the house on suspicion of attempted murder, according to a UCLA statement. Meyer is being held on charges of assault with intent to commit rape and false imprisonment, which is unlawful violation of another person’s personal liberty.

Theta Chi officials declined to comment on Friday’s incident. The police investigation is still ongoing and no further details are available at this time, according to a UCLA statement.

District Attorney Michael Carr of Jackson County, Illinois, has criminally charged an alleged rape survivor for reporting her assault.

Please take a moment to sign this petition. Mr. Carr is setting a dangerous precedent here. Rape is one of the most underreported crimes as it is. Victims should not fear criminal prosecution when attempting to seek justice.

Regardless of whether the alleged victim falsified her rape claim or not, any recourse should be sought through civil channels. District attorneys are inundated with cases; the question is, how many rape cases are sitting on Mr. Carr’s desk while he represents the State in punitive action against one of its citizens?

In what other context of rape culture is our answer predominantly that the person less interested is the one who needs to speak up and make their case? Why do we allow for habitual sex to be assumed? Globally, from the U.S. to the developing world, rape and other forms of violence against women remain at shockingly high levels. Focusing on the horrifying case of a 23-year-old Indian student who was gang-raped and beaten to death in Delhi in December, the Harvard College Women’s Center announced it would create a Beyond Gender Equality task force, “convened to offer recommendations to India and other South Asian countries in the wake of the New Delhi gang rape and murder.”

The group ignored the long history of Indian activists themselves fighting to end rape and sexual violence—including recent mass protests of South Asian women and men calling for a systemic fight against rape. And the Harvardites had nothing to say about the ample evidence of the problem of rape in the U.S.—from the sickening gang rape and subsequent cover-up at Steubenville High School in Ohio, to the systematic downplaying of rape and sexual assault at Amherst College and other universities.

In response to this “white (wo)man’s burden” take on the issue of sexual violence in South Asia, a group Indian feminists wrote the following response, first published at Kafila.org, detailing their own years of work fighting to end rape and gain justice sexual assault victims.

Dear sisters (and brothers?) at Harvard,
WE’RE A group of Indian feminists and we are delighted to learn that the Harvard community—without doubt one of the most learned in the world—has seen fit to set up a policy task force entitled “Beyond Gender Equality” and that you are preparing to offer recommendations to India (and other South Asian countries) in the wake of the New Delhi gang rape and murder.

Not since the days of Katherine Mayo have American women—and American feminists—felt such a concern for their less privileged Third World sisters. Mayo’s concern, at that time, was to ensure that the Indian state (then the colonial state) did not leave Indian women in the lurch, at the mercy of their men, and that it retained power and the rule of the just.

Yours, we see, is to work towards ensuring that steps are put in place that can help the Indian state in its implementation of the recommendations of the Justice Verma Committee, a responsibility the Indian state must take up.

This is clearly something that we, Indian feminists and activists who have been involved in the women’s movement here for several decades, are incapable of doing, and it was with a sense of overwhelming relief that we read of your intention to step into this breach.

You might be pleased to know that one of us, a lawyer who led the initiative to put pressure on the Justice Verma Committee to have a public hearing with women’s groups, even said in relief, when she heard of your plans, that she would now go on holiday and take a plane ride to see the Everest.

Indeed, we are all relieved, for now we know that our efforts will not have been in vain: the oral evidence provided by 82 activists and organizations to the Justice Verma Committee—and which we believe substantially contributed to the framing of their report—will now be in safe American hands!

Perhaps you are aware that the Indian state has put in place an “Ordinance on Sexual Assault” that ignores many recommendations of the Justice Verma Committee? If not, we would be pleased to furnish you a copy of the Ordinance, as well as a chart prepared by us, which details which recommendations have been accepted and which not.

This may be useful in your efforts to advise our government. One of the greatest things about sisterhood is that it is so global—feminism has built such strong international connections, such that whenever our First World sisters see that we are incapable of dealing with problems in our countries, they immediately step in to help us out and provide us with much needed guidance and support. We are truly grateful for this.

Perhaps you will allow us to repay the favor, and next time President Obama wants to put in place legislation to do with abortion or the Equal Rights Amendment, we can step in and help, and, from our small bit of experience in these fields, recommend what the United States can do.

Considering the fact that the person who wrote this can see your statement, this is actually one of the most hateful hurtful comments I have ever seen. This is not a “story” this is a personal account of abuse that a specific person experienced. Unless you are prepared to admit that you actually think this is all fabricated and that somehow when the accused says “I raped you” he is lying, it makes no sense to say this, especially since it can do nothing but harm a survivor of repeated abuse. If you do think it is false, admit it and accuse the writer of lying. Don’t pretend you are just trying to be objective. If you want to defend yourself by saying your just trying to bring in a different possible perspective, perhaps the right place for it is not somewhere the writer can see it. Since you have admitted that it could all be true, (could being something I’m only humoring for the sake of your delusion) maybe you should sit down and think about just how harmful and scarring your comments are to someone who is telling their story of rape.

I’d also like to point out that if you are close to the accused in any way, it puts you in the least likely position of objectivity, as anyone who has ever took the time of day to look at rape cases and their mechanics should know…..

Nonetheless, I laughed. Why? Because if they had used the word “bitch” instead, it’d have been the same joke.

I’m a fan of comedy. Funny enough, this joke reminds me of something that was said a few years ago. When I brought my dog (a chihuahua/fox terrier mix) to the veterinarian, the vet said “ooh, what a monster!” It was a joke. Obviously, my sweet little dog that only weights 15 pounds isn’t a monster. Formulaically, the joke from The Onion’s Twitter feed is identical to that little joke from the vet.

Minus the fact that Chihuahuas aren’t an oppressed minority group, still are not humans who are treated like second class citizens, and the fact that “monster” in no way carries the weight associated with anything derogatory in relation specifically to chihuahuas.

If he had used the word bitch it would have been along the same lines and you would still see the same kind of outrage. The only difference between these words , and the way we use other racist terms is the fact that public opinion remains less sympathetic to women’s equality. It’s still acceptable, funny and cool to hate on women in these ways. The problem is only a minority of people recognize it and deem it problematic.

I fancy humor too, but I’m not going to pretend that calling a small dog a monster ironically is the same as calling a 9 year old girl a word that is used specifically to degrade women, especially one so sexual.

If he had called a black boy a little nigger for being a brat (a more suitable comparison than your dog story) most people would be outraged but people don’t care that its so normalized to use these words against women all day every day and people who actually get mad just “dont have a sense of humor.”

I’m sick of my oppression being the butt of a joke. Not even female children can escape this hateful rhetoric and its scary as fuck. She will be called a cunt and a bitch starting today, until the day she dies because of the simple fact that she is female. Its a damn shame its started so early.

The point is they didn’t choose a non gendered term like ass hole! They didn’t choose a word that could be applied to people of any gender race and color and would retain the same meaning! They chose a word whose SOLE purpose is to degrade women BECAUSE they are a woman. Your not thinking about it in terms of the context of our society and what women are going through every day around you. Your not thinking about the fact that we are called bitch and cunt until we die and there is no word that carries the same weight we can use in return. Its so gendered that when the terms are used in relation to men it is literally synonymous with “acting like a woman”. If a guy is called a bitch it literally is considered an insult b/c you are implying that they are being a woman! That status which is STILL lower than men in this society.

Cunt has different implications than ass hole (all of which pertain to womanhood) and that is why he didn’t choose to call her an ass hole (which is not the male equivalent for bitch or cunt btw).
